How to Pin a Buttonhole - Wedding Tip

Wedding Tip: How to Attach a Buttonhole – A Quick Guide for the Groom

One common wedding stress point I often hear from grooms and groomsmen is how to properly attach a buttonhole to a suit. As a florist, I've designed countless buttonholes, and time and again, I see that many of the guys don’t know where or how to place it! To help take some pressure off your big day, here’s a quick guide on how to attach a buttonhole to your wedding suit.

Where to Place the Buttonhole

Your buttonhole should be positioned on the left lapel of your suit and should rest horizontally. Place it flat in the right position just by the heart—this is traditionally where buttonholes are worn.

How to Attach the Buttonhole

  1. Hold the buttonhole in place on the lapel with your left hand, making sure it sits correctly and looks natural.
  2. Turn the lapel slightly, exposing the back of the fabric.
  3. Using your right hand, thread the pin through the fabric and gently through the stem of the buttonhole, just below the flower heads.
  4. Finish by threading the pin back into the fabric, creating a slight downward angle (as if you're making a stitch).
  5. Give the buttonhole a gentle wiggle to make sure it’s securely attached. And there you have it!

Quick Tip

It’s often much easier to get someone else to help you with the buttonhole rather than doing it yourself, especially when nerves are kicking in. Don’t hesitate to ask your florist for assistance—they’ll be more than happy to help! As a florist, I always offer to help the groomsmen with this step, as it can be tricky, especially when everyone is in the wedding mood.
