The Ultimate Guide to Spring Flowers
The Beauty of Spring Flowers
Spring is finally here—or at least it’s trying! As I type this on 11th April, we’ve just experienced a huge snowstorm, and yet, only days ago on Easter Sunday, I found myself catching a bit of sunburn. British weather never fails to keep us on our toes!
Despite the rocky start, spring is an undeniably magical season, especially when it comes to flowers. Perhaps it’s the contrast to the scarcity of winter, but spring blooms always feel like a breath of fresh air. Here, I want to celebrate the beauty of spring flowers and their ability to bring joy, colour, and texture to any floral design—whether for weddings, events, or your home.
Top Spring Flowers for Weddings and Bouquets
1. Anemones – The Jewel of Spring
Anemones are an absolute favourite of mine. They come in a stunning array of colours, from pure white to vivid red and deep purple. These flowers are a bit temperamental—they can open and close depending on temperature—but when they’re in full bloom, they’re breathtaking. Perfect for bridal bouquets, anemones add a touch of elegance and sophistication.
2. Daffodils – A Dose of Sunshine
Daffodils are the quintessential spring flower, bringing a cheerful pop of yellow wherever they’re placed. Beyond the traditional varieties, there are stunning doubles and fragrant Narcissi. These smaller-headed blooms, especially the white gladioli varieties, work beautifully as cut flowers or potted plants for a rustic, natural feel.
3. Hellebores – Delicate and Dreamy
Hellebores are the unsung heroes of early spring. You’ll often spot them in gardens as they’re one of the first flowers to bloom after winter. While they require special care—like searing their stems in boiling water to extend their vase life—their delicate beauty is unmatched. Look out for the variety known as “Ellen,” which is particularly enchanting.
4. Muscari (Grape Hyacinth) – A Pop of Blue
Muscari is a delightful spring flower, adding vibrant blue tones to arrangements. Commonly mistaken for Bluebells, these petite blooms have a sweet fragrance and are perfect for both bouquets and potted indoor plants.
5. Ranunculus – Layers of Elegance
Ranunculus are becoming my all-time favourite spring flower. Part of the Buttercup family, these blooms start as tight buds but gradually open into stunning layers of petals. Available in a variety of breathtaking colours, ranunculus are long-lasting and ideal for wedding work or weekly bouquets.
6. Tulips – Versatile and Joyful
Tulips are the ultimate spring flower, flowering from March to May in a dazzling array of colours and styles. From classic to frilly, parrot, and doubles, they’re versatile and bring both colour and texture to bouquets. My personal favourite is the white parrot tulip, which often features in my spring wedding designs.
Celebrate the Season with Blossom and Beyond
No discussion of spring flowers would be complete without mentioning blossom. Though short-lived, blossom is utterly enchanting and brings a fleeting beauty to wedding arches, centrepieces, and floral installations.
Spring truly offers an abundance of floral options for weddings, events, and home arrangements. From bold and vibrant blooms to delicate and understated flowers, the season’s variety is perfect for creating standout designs.
