Wedding Flowers - Why a Minimum Spend?
Wedding Flowers – Why a Minimum Spend?
Are you wondering why there seems to be a minimum spend on wedding flowers? Let me take a moment to explain the reasoning behind it.
Understanding the Minimum Spend on Wedding Flowers
When I purchase flowers from my wholesaler, they come in what we call "wraps," and I am required to buy them in quantities of 10, 20, or sometimes even 50 stems. To avoid waste, there needs to be enough of a wedding flowers budget to ensure every stem is used to create the stunning designs you see on my Instagram. This means I need to set a minimum spend to ensure the flowers are used efficiently.
Why the Cost of Wedding Flowers Varies
As your wedding florist, I use only the finest ingredients: premium foliage, beautiful flowers, and high-quality vessels to achieve the style that makes my work unique. This, of course, comes at a price. During peak wedding season, the demand for flowers increases, leading to price fluctuations. A £1 stem could rise to £4 during high-demand periods, and we won’t know the exact cost until the week before the event.
The Labour Behind Wedding Florals
While wedding floristry may seem like a pretty profession, it’s incredibly labour-intensive. A lot of prep goes into every arrangement before the event, but nothing can be made until 2-3 days before your wedding day. Florists also often need to hire freelancers to help with the workload, which adds to the overall cost. Plus, as small business owners, we also have to manage our own overheads, including paying mortgages and running costs, which have been rising due to the increased cost of living.
The Impact of Rising Costs on Wedding Florals
You may notice that wedding flowers costs have risen, especially for quotes in 2024. While I strive to honour all proposals, the increased cost of living and the fuel crisis did force me to adjust some prices. This is part of the reason some florists set a minimum spend. It’s not about charging more than necessary – it’s about covering the costs involved in running a business and creating the best wedding flowers possible.
Why Do Some Wedding Florists Have Different Minimum Spends?
Florists with physical shops often have higher overheads and are able to do smaller-budget weddings because they keep more stock on hand. As I work as a mobile florist, my minimum spend for wedding flowers is set at £5000 during the summer months, dropping to £2000 during the off-peak months (November to February). This ensures that I can continue to provide high-quality flowers and professional service, no matter the time of year.
