Wedding Trend 2023 - Shades of Blue
Love It or Hate It? The Rise of Blue Wedding Flowers
Honestly, for a long time, I wasn’t sure about blue wedding flowers. My mind would immediately flash to those garish dyed blue roses, and I’d want to run for the hills! Blue can be a tricky hue to balance in wedding floral designs—it can feel cold and stark if not done right. But I’ve had a change of heart. In fact, after working on nearly half of my 2023 weddings featuring blue in some form, I’m officially calling it – blue flowers are a trend in the making!
It all started with Clare and Beth's wedding in early 2022. Their colour palette was blue and blush, inspired by their stunning sapphire engagement rings. Blue became the central theme, with shades ranging from deep navy to soft, delicate blue. We worked carefully to ensure the blue tones felt natural and avoided anything dyed. The goal was to keep it 100% organic, with the deeper blues featured in the venue styling and lighter blues used in the flowers.
The Best Natural Blue Flowers for Weddings
If you’re thinking of incorporating blue into your wedding flowers, there are plenty of stunning natural options available throughout the seasons. Here are some of my favourite blue wedding flowers:
- Hydrangea: These blooms come in a range of shades, from pastel blues to rich, ocean-like tones. They’re versatile but can be quite dominant, so pairing them with smaller flowers like Nigella or Forget-Me-Nots can help balance the design.
- Delphinium: This tall flower brings a regal touch to any arrangement, offering deep, rich blues perfect for autumn or winter weddings.
- Forget-Me-Nots: These tiny flowers are ideal for adding a delicate hint of blue to your bouquets or table arrangements.
- Thistle: With its unique shape and bold colour, thistle adds texture and interest to blue floral arrangements.
- Nigella (Love-in-a-Mist): These airy blooms bring an almost ethereal quality to wedding bouquets, especially when paired with other blue flowers.
Another seasonal favourite is anemone, particularly the spring variety with blue or white petals and a striking blue centre. Anemones offer a beautiful way to introduce blue hues, especially for more minimalist floral designs.
Blue Flowers: A Symbol of Romance and Hope
Did you know that a blue flower was a central symbol for the Romanticism Movement? It represents desire, love, hope, and beauty—qualities that resonate deeply as we move forward from the uncertainty of recent years. No wonder blue wedding flowers are becoming so popular. They symbolise not only love but also hope for the future, which is something we all crave.
As I’ve seen in many of my 2023 weddings, blue flowers can add a unique and meaningful touch to your big day. Whether you choose deep navy hydrangeas, delicate Forget-Me-Nots, or romantic delphiniums, blue flowers can be the perfect addition to your wedding floral designs.
